Re: [Phys-L] Fair use?

Ahhh, is this the liberal court or the conservative one. So far it is a
50-50 decision with uncertainty attached. Of course if the transmission is
private and not advertised it is unlikely to cause problems. Now if a
thousand copies were transmitted that is probably a different story. People
used to get away with selling pirated records of material from other
coyrighted records. Now they just openly put the stuff on the web and even
sometimes openly advertise it for sale. The rate of prosecution is very low
and mainly for very popular profitable stuff.

Probably OK:

Quoting the source given below:
in some circumstances, such as certain uses involving scholarship or
research, the "progress" referred to in the Constitution is best
promoted and the public is best served by allowing an
unauthorized use
of the copyrighted work.
...
the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by
reproduction
in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that
section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting,
teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use),
scholarship, or
research, is not an infringement of copyright.
