Most of the evidence I've read (and please don't ask for a reference) is multitasking is N.D.G. To what I think JD et alii are referring is serial tasking.

I think I have heard about some such result recently: to the effect that if one responds to emails as they arrive, while doing a background task, the result is less productive, than stacking the emails to be answered together.
