Is one of the secondary terminals earthed or common with one end of the primary?

The coil I used has only two DC terminals, a potentiometer for adjusting
the voltage, and a "positive/negative" switch for reversing the polarity.

It's necessry (model T sparking coil and the more modern ones) for one side of the secondary to be "grounded" Luminous tube transformers ground the secondary's centre tap to the case, which should go to the U ground.

A continuity detector will determine if your secondary is isolated. Since the source is DC it evidently has a vibrator driven points. (or solid state switching system.)

These typically are DC output (pulsating, of course) with some reverse EMF. With out a capacitor it's more AC.
