Have I got this right: there are discernible patterns in the distribution of galaxies that derive from sound waves in the early universe, when matter was still dense enough for this. The distance to these features is accurately known (how is this calibration achieved?) and thus provides a datum for getting distances to galaxies that lie on the features.
