Re: [Phys-l] not a monopoly on the news

If John's only point was the one you point out, then my appologies are in order. However, my take on it
that it was a commentary that the included the assumption that conservatives only get news from one
source.

Somehow, I'm missing the point of this entire thread. I originally thought JD was giving kudos to those news sources who were not using a single instance of winter weather in a particular location to validate "global warming". The responses immediately spun into a Conservative/Liberal debate. What happened?

Globally, this winter was colder than the 1979-2009 average for global satellite temperature

People do not need to look at any news outlet at all to know it was a mild winter in the US.

Weather forecasters did not do a good job of predicting this winter...

I take issue with your presumption that conservatives only get their news from one source. I am
conservative and I do not even have access to that one source. My news comes from news outlets all
over the world.

I thought it was always ASSumed that statements such as implied by JD were interpreted as a preponderance, not 100%.

Before, you jump to the conclusion that a conservative physicist isn't representative of
most conservatives, my experience, at least with conservatives I've run into (42 % of adult Americans
self-identify as conservative, as opposed to 19 % that self-identify as liberal)

If that's true, why was Obama elected, and so many "liberal" reps, and senators?

and its many, that I am
not alone.

Of course you're not alone. W/, what? 100 million adults, surely you'll find a few like minded. Besides your acquaintances, et alii, are self selected. Mine are: I only know one person whose not a "liberal" among my friends, and he's a relative. I live in a community of liberals -- I just had coffee w/ my wife's former housemate now a judge (appointed by Schwarzenegger) Her husband and my wife's husband (first) were also either attorneys or paralegals for the Calif. Rural Legal Assistance, inc. hated by the Ag. industry, and called worse than liberal.

Between 2000 and 2006, CRLA was investigated six times by LSC or by its Inspector General. The subject of the investigations ranged from issues of timekeeping, to facilities sharing, to CRLA affiliations with non-LSC agencies. The CRLA maintained that the investigations were political fallout for obtaining over one million dollars in settlements from dairy farmers.[3]
Padilla contends that organizations such as CRLA are "seemingly singled out for special political harassment, through more intense investigations.

There are two kinds of people in the world, those that make ASSumptions, and those that don't.

Not long ago it was dangerous to be known as a socialist -- now, perhaps not dangerous, but frowned upon to be know as a liberal (except in economics!)

bc thinks it unwise to be a self described liberal.
