[Phys-l] potential energy density for a wave on a string

Well, my last message was about a slightly old topic (2 weeks old). Now how about one that is over a decade old? The matter of longitudinal momentum for a wave on a string. (Yes, most of the old gang weighed in on this topic: http://usna.edu/Users/physics/mungan/Scholarship/WaveMomentum.html.

Rowland has a new paper (EJP 32:1475, Nov. 2011) in which he says it's impossible to write down an accurate formula for PE density without including the longitudinal motion of string elements. Take a look if you're interested and see if it persuades you. -Carl
