That same "chord" played in my head yesterday as I turned off the lights in my office. Then I took a motorcycle ride and did the experiment with some tight, fast curves.

One of my colleaues just suggested that since they used GPS to measure
distance, they probably ignored the curvature of the earth - the
straight line distance is a little shorter.
