Isn't a Diode LASER what's usually used with fiber optics??

Yes but LEDs are used also. LEDs are, however, far inferior , they
suffer pulse distortion over a much shorter distance of fiber cable and are
lower power. Diode injection lasers are more expensive and require quite a bit
of support circuit to prevent them from suffering thermal runaway. LED
light transmitters are useful over short distance and in relativity low speed
applications.
