indeed, it would be ludicrous to expect a child to sing a song or
play an instrument without having a thorough grounding in music
notation and theory. Playing and listening to music, let alone
composing an original piece, are considered very advanced topics and
are generally put off until college, and more often graduate school.

Presley, who never received formal music training or learned to read music, studied and played by ear.

In 2004, one of Pavarotti's former managers, Herbert Breslin, published a book, The King & I.[16] Seen by many as bitter and sensationalistic, it is critical of the singer's acting (in opera), his inability to read music well and learn parts, and of his personal conduct, although acknowledging their mutual success. In an interview in 2005 with Jeremy Paxman on the BBC, Pavarotti rejected the allegation that he could not read music, although he acknowledged he did not read orchestral scores.

Mr. Domingo, on the other hand, began his musical life as a baritone and later manufactured a tenor range above it through hard work and scrupulous intelligence. Mr. Pavarotti, although he could find the heart of a character, was not an intellectual presence. His ability to read music in the true sense of the word was in question. Mr. Domingo, in contrast, is an excellent pianist with an analytical mind and the ability to learn and retain scores by quiet reading.
