As an alternative to engaging the interest of the math scholars, these days one can enter

solve x = a * exp[b * x] into the Wolfram Alpha search engine, which at the very least will identify the transcendental function by name - and pursue it into Mathematica - though it may only do as well as the Wiki did, before John K provided the second branch....
.... no,that's unfair, after looking over the vivid graphic solutions in the complex plane.
