Re: [Phys-l] Algebra based/calculus based laboratory

Jacob -

It's worth it. We created separate algebra based mechanics labs to solve an enrollment problem about 3 years ago and have been "growing the labs apart" ever since. (We have had separate sections for our majors for all of my history.) Some activities still overlap, but you can make better use of equipment and tailor the experience; it's definitely advantageous to have separate activities with different motivations, types of mathematical analysis, etc. Feel free to ask more specific questions (off list, if you like) about the differences - I'm not sure what kind of convincing you need to do.

Subject: [Phys-l] Algebra based/calculus based laboratory

Hi all,
I'm new to this list, but I did not find any related messages in the
archives, so I'll post my question:

Do any other institutions out there use the same laboratory activities in
both your algebra based (or non-majors) introductory course, and your
calculus based (or majors) intro course? Some colleagues need convincing
that along with revising the 8 year old manual, creating two sets of
activities will be worth the time and effort.

Thanks,
