Most meteorologists believe the jet stream affects the movement of large
storm systems. So a shift in the jet stream could possibly explain
unusual weather patterns, for example the recent snow in UK. The
researchers in the article suggest that the shifts in the jet stream are
consistent with a warming climate.

This is all well and good I suppose.

The problem I see is not the observation of effects associated with putative climate change.
What astounds me is the effort to go after academics - to demonize them - to demean their
motivation.

Who does this kind of thing?
Americans do.

Why do they do it?
Interesting question: it was easy to see a connection (in hindsight) between tobacco company
sponsored efforts to demean epidemiologists' studies of the smoking/cancer link.
They continued in this effort for 20 years. And now they are paying.

Who will be paying when we (those of uys on high ground certainly) are reviewing
the recent past, at some point?
