[Phys-l] Curious strain effect in plastik packaging

Some plastics fluoresce when exposed to UV from a Hg discharge (also seen when exposed to sunlite).
Those that don't do at the edges and where folded. So I tore and folded several samples which then fluoresced at the strains. Pourquoi?
bc collects fluorescing plastic, because he thinks they will make nuclear scintillator material.
p.s. doesn't work w/ cling wrap or baggies, does w/ PET (recycle #1) which also fluoresces slightly unstrained.
