I think that's probably the crux of it, Hugh - i.e. actually ignoring the Gospel and focusing on the morality implicit in much of the Old Testament. Rather ironic for people who call themselves Christians in my personal view (for what that is worth). Seems similar things can happen in Islam - a religion which teaches about taking in strangers and putting their needs first, and so indeed with many who are nominally religious without following the tenets of their prophets.

Anyway, apologies, this has shifted a bit from physics.
