Yes, I have also experienced this. A message comes in as a reply, but I never got its antecedents.

I have once or twice noticed something of this kind.
I realise - too late - that someone sent me a personal note following
on (say) a Phys-l post, to which I then responded publically. A lapse of etiquette, no doubt.

But more often, I have noted the internet service provider - sbcglobal -
(an associate of that notorious, nefarious mail-tap entity called AT&T
which recently abandoned its customer base who formerly
used their news group servers) has experienced a mail server outage which makes more than one list post undeliverable and has led to warnings of this kind.
