Maybe it's abit like the Alexander's ring between a double rainbow, which is down to total internal reflection.  So that less light reaches the eye, thus making it appear darker...

My 6 year old stumped me with a similar question.  When taking a bath, why is the portion of her arm under water have a slightly different color?
