I thought the point was pollution -- Likely much less when I saw it in Hungary and Bratislava because of the "underdevelopment" during their socialist regimes, ca. 1989, and even less during the Hapsburgs.

p.s. the NATO bombing of the oil works and chem. factories along the Danube very seriously polluted it.
