Re: [Phys-l] win/win solution for light bulbs

Incandescents are solid state too, nicht wahr?

bc, amazed at the rapidity of the signal lamps' replacement in CA.

p.s. major problem till 110 V. led developed. i.e. now requires the same p/s as the CFLs + rectifier? -- imagine all on one chip! Or house wired for 3V.?

It is entirely forseeable that the CFL problem will
go away *and* the incandescent problem will go away.

LEDs will take over.

They last practically forever.
They are highly robust w.r.t dropping, vibration, et cetera.
They work OK across a wide range of temperatures, which means
(among other things) that they can be used outdoors, and/or
in enclosures with poor ventilation.
They are very efficient.

They already dominate the market for traffic lights, for
all of the above reasons plus the adjustable color.

Soon they will be cheap enough to use for all purposes.

Hooray for solid-state physics!
