Re: [Phys-l] FW: universal gravitation lab

Unusual construction, probably banned now in Calif.; inexpensive, but sensitive to earthquaking. I had to sign a waiver to enter to get equipment for us to continue in the new, but not yet fully occupied, Chem. building. After the several floors were shored w/ 12 X 12 wooden "studs", and the engineers though that safed * it, we slowly returned.

Long time ago -- did I solder it or is it clamped? I do remember using a haemostat to hold in place the metal rod while I clamped it at the top setting the height of the mirror (and bar).

Barchester Towers is thought Anthony's best. It was read on KPFK (Berkeley's people's sister radio in LA) over a period of many many days. To do a trollope in diplomacy (I heard this regarding a Secty. of State some time ago.) is to immediately accept a hint and force its consummation. At least one family in a novel forced a marriage from just a kiss. cf. shotgun marriage. There is a similar event in the current TV series, Jeeves and Wooster.

* They opined another similar quake would collapse the building; the posts were heavily spalled from the rocking of the lentils. Nat. Sci. II now has massive steel buttress sunk in, what, eight by eight by 20 foot concrete piers. (lotsa rebar too)

And I thought the point of the lab was to teach vibration isolation, patience, technique, and partner co-operation in addition to "getting a result".

Quite acceptable data collected on second floor of post and lentil building [condemned by 1989 earthquake], but some opted to come in the evening.

*** What is a condemned "post and lentil building" ? If the building was condemned, how were you able to legally use it?

Curiously, never heard a complaint, or from the Millikan.

*** What is "the Millikan" ? Is she, or it, a person or another building
on your campus?

bc, replacer of the Leybold gold plated suspensions, inter alia.

*** What technique do you use to replace those gold plated suspensions?

p.s. Pre Victorian and Victorians (at the least the well to do who constituted many of the scientists) had more patience, you read Trollop lately?

*** What, Where, or Who is a Trollop?
