Re: [Phys-l] Conferences for HS Physics Teachers

As a new teacher you would qualify to "volunteer" at the meeting in exchange for having the registration fee waived and usually a $50 gift cert. to the AAPT bookstore. Volunteering involves working about 6-8 hours total at the exhibit booth or in sessions. (This is not being offered this winter as it is a joint meeting with the astronomers, but I believe it will be offered again next summer.)

It may not be the same as a 4 week Modeling workshop, there is still much to be gained.

There is of course the summer AAPT (American Association of Physics Teachers) meetings. These include two days of optional workshops (some extra cost involved), and then the main 3-4 day meeting with plenary speakers, multiple invited and contributed sessions, a major demo show, picnic, etc. There is an apparatus competition and a student photo competition. These meetings cater both to HS and College
teachers. They are generally held on a University of College campus (or near one), and often on-campus accommodations are available. The 2007 meeting is at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, the 2008 meeting at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton. A membership in the AAPT is well-worth while, getting you The Physics Teacher magazine and the Announcer journal--the latter having all the meeting information as well as publishing the abstracts for all the AAPT meeting talks.

The PHYSHARE list is also more HS oriented (fewer alpha-males to contend with ;-)

Subject: [Phys-l] Conferences for HS Physics Teachers

As a new HS physics teacher, I'm wondering if there are any highly
recommended national summer conferences that run for one-week. I'm aware
of the popular week-long AP workshops that the College Board offers, but
that is not what I'm seeking.

The chemistry teachers have both Chem Ed as well as the BCCE conferences,
with the Chem Ed Conferences mostly focused on secondary teaching. The
BCCE conferences tend to attract more college faculty.

I recall hearing a number of years ago that there were essentially two
different summer conferences for physics educators. One was geared toward
high school teachers (labs, demos, teaching methods) and one was more
suited for the college educators.

If anyone can tell me the details of any summer conferences for 2007, I
would greatly appreciate it. Ohio State University has offered a number of
highly regarded professional development opportunities, but I'm wondering
about other options.

Thank you very much.
