Re: [Phys-l] trimester course set-up

I don't know if your situation is the same as ours. We have been on trimesters for about 4 years now (after having been on the block schedule for 5). What used to be a year long class of 50 minutes a day now needs to be taught in 2 trimesters of 68 minutes a day. In chemistry 1st tri we try to cover scientific method and measurement, early atomic models and radioactivity, quantum model and the period table, bonding, nomenclature, quantities (mole, percent composisiton, molarity), basic reactions.
2nd tri: limiting reactants & redox, kinetic theory, gas laws, acids & bases, simple organic.

In physics 1st tri: kinematics, dynamics, conservation laws. 2nd tri: electricity, magnetism, sound, light.

I often feel cheated with both the amount of actual contact time as well as the number of opportunities to assign homework. In the full year schedule we had 8900 minutes of contact time. In our current schedule we have 7888 minutes of student contact time per subject. This amounts to taking 20 days out of the full year schedule just on contact time alone.

Our high school is currently planning on switching from semesters to
trimesters. We are going to be refiguring our bio, chem, and physics. I am wondering if any other folks out there are on trimesters and if so,
how you have broken up the main units of these classes. Is it possible
to have stand alone courses or are they sequential? Any input is
appreciated.
