Re: [Phys-l] laptops banned from class.

Regarding lab notes, I have students record their lab notes in a bound,
quadrille notebook, which I collect at the end of the lab period, grade,
and return the next day. They then write a formal lab report, based on
their lab notes. One third of their lab grade is based on their
notebooks and in-lab performance; two thirds of their lab grade is based
on their lab reports.

Somewhere in this conversation we might want to address the need to
teach and reinforce what it means to "take good notes." If we provide
all the materials all the time, some students never develop the skill to
pay attention and identify what's important. This includes, in my mind,
the skill to take good laboratory notes and properly record data.
