If you really want a shock--ask your class (especially a HS or non-science
majors class) to write down the population of the U.S. (or appropriate
country) and the World.
(My gen-ed class answered between 2 million and 9 billion [10^9] for the
U.S.--only a few were close, but better with the World although the range
was 100 million to 65 billion.)
