Does the energy come from within the pedestrian? It certainly is released
there, but this only happens when the Oxygen is combined with the food. The
food itself certainly contains no energy that can be readily extracted by
itself. The energy is in the food+oxygen system.

One amusing thing is that the energy comes from within the
pedestrian, while the momentum comes from outside, and must
flow across the boundary.
