Fundamentalism, as you have defined it, is what I would call "not science"
as opposed to "anti-science." Compartmentalization allows blind
acceptance of (religious) statements in one arena and good science in
another (orthogonal, as you put it) arena. Orthogonal doesn't have to be
anti.
