Intelligent design and other attempts to make religion more
"scientific"
just don't appear to have any merit because, at the root, religion
is in a
different compartment from science, and compartmental overlap just
isn't
there.
This is not entirely true as there have been some notable attempts to
align theology with science. Teilard de Chardin proposed a theology
of spiritual evolution. Of course he would be ignored by the
fundamentalists because he would qualify as a radical liberal.
However his influence within the Roman church has been great.

And remember that relativity has been criticized by religious groups
because they think it proposes that everything is relative. Some have
called it a Jewish plot. They never realized that it also has rules
just as strict as Galilean relativity, and does not apply to human
affairs.
