[Phys-L] Re: California Physics Standards Test

p.s. What do you think of that std. test; you

I'm not a big fan of the test, assuming that it will
be of equal quality to the questions released. I wrote
some crictism (I think) when I first saw the
questions.

I do not think that standardized tests are inherently
evil, but they almost always end up so. The cost to
write a high quality test is high, and few
organization are willing to bear it. Further, the need
to let schools do some experimenting is an integral
part of our society, and most of these test preclude
that by being specific in what is taught and giving no
reward for the teaching of other ideas.

The old New York Regent Exams were the best that I had
seen that were devised by a state system. They seemed
to be well tested. I especially liked the way that
test had a required section and then a variety of
topics that the student could select to take.

As a teacher at a private school, I did not need to
administer the test, and I didn't. I do give the Force
Concept Inventory to my students before and after the
section on force and momentum. However, that test has
so few questions that it is more for me than for the
students.
