[Phys-L] Re: California Physics Standards Test

This is a follow up of the thread, California standards test in Physics
initiated by Larry Wolf, January fifth. He included two of the
questions along w/ the source:

http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sr/documents/css05rtqphysics.pdf *

Because 21 members contributed 44 posts, plus a spawning of two other
threads [a branched decay into two daughters?], I thought most would
have the PDF, etc. I realize that was a bit presumptuous. I have all
the posts and the PDF, as I unilaterally "volunteered to pursue the
matter. Most, I suppose, don't clutter up their computer w/ about 15k
msgs. plus related files. I get rid of most of them periodically by
acquiring a new computer.

Dean Baird's handout is the same as the above PDF except he also added:

http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sr/resources.asp

in addition to his request for "feedback", etc.

That URL appears to be one step up (or down depending on your point of
view) from the questions PDF.

* Sorry Netscape 7.2 is a bit deficient -- drag and drop doesn't work w/
PDF URLs.

Well, Bernard, are you going to give us the test questions?

Drs. Wolf, Hake, et al.!

I presume MS. Hernandez, as promised, referred our discussion to the
Science Content Review Panel for the State Board of Education, because
one of them collared me at the most recent meeting of the SF Bay Physics
Teachers (BAPT *). I remember the conversation only poorly. However,
the gist was, complete, or nearly so, agreement w/ our general
conclusion. The test is rather poor. He explained the testing company
submits questions and the committee selects. Don't even think about how
bad the test would be w/o his efforts to eliminate the worst questions.
He invited me to post this, but I delayed 'till -- read next:

He is also an active member of the NCN section of the AAPT. At our
annual meeting yesterday he passed out the most recent Released Test
Questions, and in a blank spot on the first page inserted:

PLEASE direct feedback (including well reasoned rants!) to

Dean Baird

I later said I thought he would be inundated; his reply, was
essentially, bring it on, and agreed it would give him ammunition.

bc, who prays you do write.

p.s. I have not received a reply from the ETS.
