[Physltest] [Phys-L] Re: "Effective" teaching methods

In a previous post, some demarcation lines disappeared. I am reposting
below to clarify who said what.

The FOSS kits are great. The only disadvantage that I see is that FOSS
kits, as sold, only cover single topics. IMHO, what's needed is a _good_
science curriculum for each grade which provides research-based materials
and resources for the entire year.

The FOSS kits are expensive.

From what I hear, in our local school the teachers don't have a set science
curriculum, but pick and choose from various kits and materials (some FOSS,
some not, some the teachers' own) as they move from topic to topic. The
effect is rather scattershot.

Please note that the FOSS kits cover a single topical area with activities
that build on one another over the 6-10 week course of the unit. They do not
cover a single topic, rather they cover a single topical area. The details
of each kit are on-line at:
<http://www.lawrencehallofscience.org/foss/scope/index.html>
Typically 3 modules are used in a single year, as shown in the above link.

Regarding their expense, see:
<http://www.lawrencehallofscience.org/foss/faq.html#a1>

Teachers often pick and choose those resources they find fit their
particular situation, and meet their standards. Don't we all choose the
resources that best meet our needs?
