a) The typical aircraft has two gauges: one indicates airspeed,
while the other indicates Mach number.

b) It isn't thaaat tricky to convert from one to the other, given
the temperature.

Exactly. Since there is no standard reference, when someone asks me
"how fast is Mach X?" my answer is "I don't know, what's the
temperature/altitude and I can give you a pretty good idea."
