perhaps he means near field the "rays" are not parallel but 8 minutes
later (very far field) nearly so.

This is why a candle makes a much better model for the sun than a slide
projector to show phases, eclipses, etc.

bc, who is a fruit and candle person.

p.s. there is limb darkening (sun is not Lambertian), but due to the
cooler photosphere.

I wonder what the evidence is for a preponderance of solar
emission in the radial direction? I don't see that much
darkening of the disk at the margin....
