...and then there's the celebrated experimental protocol which
marks a patch of rock outcrop with a compass direction,
drills out a rock core an inch or two diameter by a few inches long,
and subjects it to a micromagnetometer measurement, with thermal
cycling, to ascertain its remanent direction of magnetization,
leading to interesting theories of geomagnetic reversals and
paleomagnetic field maps.
