Re: PER CENTRAL (Digital Library) request for features

In his PhysLrnR/Phys-L post "PER CENTRAL (Digital Library) request
for features" Bob Beichner (2003) wrote (slightly edited):

"Bruce Mason (AAPT's Physical Sciences Resource Center Director) and I
are putting together a proposal to the NSF's National Science Digital
Library(NSDL) <http://nsdl.org/render.userLayoutRootNode.uP>."

Subscribers who are interested in Digital Libraries might like to
scan a recent STLHE-L post by Gary Marks (2003) regarding the Grand
Opening of Association for the Advancement of Computing Education's
(AACE's) Digital Library.

The AACE homepage is at <http://www.aace.org/default.htm>. AACE is
sponsoring a conference "ED-MEDIA: World Conference on Educational
Multimedia, Hypermedia, and Telecommunications" in Honolulu on June
23-28, 2003. The registration fee for AACE members is $395 by May 6
and $435 after May 6.

According to information at <http://www.aace.org/DL/>:

The AACE Digital Library enables users to:

* Conduct scholarly research.
* Keep current on the latest research and publications in their fields.
* Access and fully search to publications in an easy, searchable, and
efficient manner.
* Maintain their academic interests in the area of information technology
in education.
* Receive Table of Contents Alerts prior to publication.

The Journals and Proceedings that can be searched are indicated at
<http://www.aace.org/dl/index.cfm/fuseaction/AdvancedSearch>. The
Journals are:

International Journal on E-Learning (IJEL)
Information Technology in Childhood Education Annual (ITCE)
Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching (JCMST)
Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia (JEMH)
Journal of Interactive Learning Research (JILR)
Journal of Technology and Teacher Education (JTATE)
Educational Technology Review (ETR)
Contemporary Issues in Technology & Teacher Education (CITE)
International Journal of Educational Telecommunications (IJET)
WebNet Journal: Internet Technologies, Applications & Issues (WEBNETJ)

These are all AACE journals [see <http://www.aace.org/pubs/default.htm>].

A keyword search for "physics" in the full text of all the above
journals yielded 287 hits, including an article by PER's Steinberg &
Oberem (2000).

I searched the NSDL at
<http://nsdl.org/tag.b56875d9e16a5a9.render.userLayoutRootNode.target.n12.uP>
for "AACE" and obtained only two hits, neither to the AACE Digital
Library. It appears that the AACE's Digital Library is NOT a part of
the NSF's NSDL,
but I would hope that links have or will be made between the two libraries.

Unfortunately, unlike the synergy-promoting OPEN ACCESS archives of
most discussion lists, PhysLrnR limits access to PhysLrnR subscribers,
purportedly to reduce the spamming of subscribers. However, it takes
only a few minutes to subscribe and then unsubscribe by following the
simple directions at
<http://listserv.boisestate.edu/archives/physlrnr.html> / "Join or
leave the list (or change settings)" where "/" means "click on."
Rather than unsubscribe after using the archives, it's easier to
subscribe in the first place using the "NOMAIL" option under
"Miscellaneous." Then, as a subscriber, you may access the archives
and/or post messages at any time, while receiving NO MAIL from the
list!
