Re: reading lists

A new updated version of Mr. Tompkins has been recently published.

As a high school student, I loved Isaac Asimov's science essays. There are
many published compliations, including a three-volume set on physics. Asimov
also got me hooked on science fiction, but that's another story. <g>

There's also something called the Anchor Doubleday "Science Study Series,"
consisting of a large number of little paperbacks on various topics
published in the 1960's under a grant. (Hah! The one on my desk says it was
NSF & Ford Foundation et al., as part of the PSSC project.) These were
written for a high school audience in the hopes of inspiring students to go
into science. (It worked for me.) The authors were top-notch, including
Gamow. Alas, the series is out of print, but some titles (such as One, Two,
Three, Infinity and Thirty Years that Shook Physics) have been reprinted by
other publishers. If you see science study series books in the used
bookstores, grab 'em...they're gems.

For shorter articles & etc. in science "current events", refer your students
to Science News. It's very up-to-date, accurate, and accessible.

In the [all] vein, I would like to an old timer - George Gamow.

One, Two, Three, Infinity might be a bit dated but Mr. Tompkins in
Wonderland is still instructive..
