SPECTRA
Summer Teachers' Workshop
August 4-8, 2003
SPace Telescope Educational Collaboration introducing Teachers to Research
in Astronomy
The Physics Program at University of La Verne (ULV) in collaboration with
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) will be offering a no-cost inquiry-based
workshop to secondary teachers of physics and physical science during the
week of August 4-8, 2003. The primary goal of this full-day, weeklong
workshop is to enable teachers to learn more about Hubble Space Telescope
(HST) research and how they might incorporate it into their curricula.
Daily activities will include:
lectures by JPL scientists active in HST research
units on spectroscopy, extra-solar planets, stellar birth and death, and
planetary nebulae
topics linked to the latest California Science Education Standards
hands-on classroom projects involving actual HST data
a tour of Jet Propulsion Laboratory
a nighttime star observing session using ULV telescopes
The workshop will be held on campus at the University of La Verne, La
Verne, CA. There is no cost for participation in the workshop. (College
credit may be available, for which a fee is required.) High school and
junior high teachers of physics and/or physical science are encouraged to
apply. The application deadline is May 30, 2003.
