Since I was a student not so long ago I have some thoughts.
At first in classes where there were just a midterm and a final, I slacked off. Didn't keep up and so forth. After I got my midterm grade I was clued in that it wasn't going to fly.
One of the problems is that there are many demands on a student's time. If I am taking 4-5 courses, I do the material that is due first. Then if there is any time left over, I get to the work that is technically assigned. Needless to say, I hardly ever got to that point.
The point is that if studying a few days before the test would suffice, that is what I would do. For those classes were it wouldn't, I studied earlier.
Students do what works.
