THIRD ANNUAL FALL CONFERENCE ON CASE STUDY TEACHING IN SCIENCE
October 4 and 5, 2002, Hyatt Regency Downtown Buffalo, New York

The aim of our annual fall conference is to bring together people who are
interested in teaching science using active learning techniques with a
particular focus on case studies. It is designed for experienced case
study teachers who want to sharpen their case writing and teaching skills
as well as newcomers to the method.

This year's conference features sessions on how to write cases and case
teaching notes, use journal articles as case studies, lead successful case
discussions, use active learning strategies in the science classroom,
assess student learning using cases, mine the media for ideas for cases,
and teach cases using a variety of methods including the directed case
method, problem-based learning, team learning, and the interrupted case
method.

Our keynote speaker this year is the well-known engineering educator
Richard M. Felder, Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus of Chemical
Engineering, North Carolina State University, and Co-Director of the
SUCCEED Engineering Education Coalition Faculty Development Program. The
recipient of numerous teaching awards, Dr. Felder has published
extensively on active learning, cooperative learning, assessment and
evaluation of teaching, faculty development and mentoring, and learning
styles.

Clyde (Kipp) Herreid, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Director of the
National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science, is our conference
leader. Trained as a biologist and physiological ecologist with
postdoctoral experience in marine biology, Dr. Herreid has been using
case-based teaching methods for over 17 years. He has conducted numerous
workshops around the country on case method teaching and problem-based
learning and is the author of a regularly featured column on case studies
in the _Journal of College Science Teaching_.
