Re: Reading quizzes/assignments

This is from a High School teacher so administration will be different in college. I give many reading quizzes. They are usually just 5 or 10 definitions from the reading assignment. The students may use their notes. We correct them immediately in class (students who want to their grades to remain private put student numbers on the paper
instead of names), I pick up all the papers and then hand them out again in random fashion. I tell the students that by first reading and taking notes on the reading, then copying the notes to the quiz, and then correcting it again in class with encouragement to add to their notes there is a much higher probability of the "stuff sticking to
their brain". I count it as 10% of their grade. It is a big bonus for me at conference time with parents because the students who fail are always those who also fail the reading quizzes. The students and parents can't complain much about my teaching when the students can't pass open note reading quizzes.

I'm thinking of using some sort of reading quiz or reading assignment in my next intro algebra course to encourage my students to at least minimally read the text before coming to class--a set of questions that could be easily answered from a first read of the assigned section. (One implementation is described in Mazur's Peer Instruction.)

I would be interested in hearing from other members of the list who have used reading quizzes/assignments in their courses, particularly how it was administered and how it worked (results). Thanks in advance.
