Some of these programs are funded or partially funded. And your college must
have some form of professional development funds, to which you could apply
for travel/hotel support as well (ask Depts and Deans). It can be done cheaply;
my summer AAPT meeting campground receipts got me univ audited last year :^).
Not only does attending a _short_ meeting or PD opportunity partially meet
job requirements for self-development, but attendance can be part of a formal
personal professional plan presented to your college. Investigate the
opportunities; don't paint yourself into the corner. Since you are concerned
with job loss, how does _unemployment_ fit into your financial plans?

You have already mentioned job loss as a possibility; you need to know that
it costs your college time and money to fire, search for and replace
faculty. Funding faculty professional development is cheaper. This can be
presented to your Dept head and Dean if you feel that your job is endangered.
See the AAPT pograms listed in my previous email and try to work a cost
estimate for presentation to your college for support.

Finally, whereabouts exactly in Iowa are you located??

Best wishes,
