Aprill 2002 PHYSICS TODAY cover

I was surprise to see so much lighting in India. I admit I
don't know much about India. Is this lighting because it
is a highly developed nation (I didn't think it was "that"
developed or is this a high population phenomenom (I
know there are a lot of people in India) or are both ideas,
development and population, tied together. This is
probably a social studies question, but I value the
advice/opinions of my colleagues.
