Re: Flame Tube

I'm making a flame tube as we speak.

Mine is out of 3" EMT...electrical mechanical tubing. You can get a 10
foot joint at an electrical supply house for about $20.

I've cut it to 2 meters length. I've been told that lengths from 4 feet
to 10 feet work with the longer tubes "more specacular.". I choose 2
meters based on storage and transportation considerations.

I am in the process of laying out and drilling 1/16th inch holes on 1.0
cm centers. I've been advised to use #53 or #56 drills which are
slightly smaller BUT Home Depot didn't have any of them. I've also been
advised by someone who used the 1/16 inch bits that it worked quite
nicely.

I'll add a gas manifold on the side with 3 inlets and hook it up to the
gas supply in the lab.

I'll add one speaker on the end purchased from Radio Shack
.
The folks that have been sharing the ideas and specificcations tell me
that it's a really neat demo.

Good Luck,

Subject: Flame Tube

Greetings everyone. Recently, I have been having my
student bring in
"junk" to school that may be used for later on in the school year.
One of my students brought in several computer speakers
that are about
3 inches in diameter. I remember a while back, I saw a demo of
something called a "flame tube", which was a long metal pipe with
several small holes drilled into it. The pipe is connected to a
methane source. Either end of the pipe is sealed with one
side sealed
with a speaker. When the gas is lit and the sound is turned on and
adjusted to create a standing wave, the flames will show this
according to their flame height.

Has anyone made anything like this? Can anyone make any
recommnedations on how to put one together?

Thanks,
Dwight'
