But I'm *not* saying that static friction is doing work here. I'm
saying it is doing pseudowork.  It also does pseudowork (of the
negative gender) on a disk rolling down an incline.


As a second thought, I would consider static friction to be a nonconservative force in mechanics.  Do you agree?  If so, then if it does work of the negative gender (is this male or female?), then the total mechanical energy should decrease.  I do not observe this to any significant degree in controlled experiments.  Do you?
