Re: ASLA 02-03 CA May De-Emphasize Geoscience in High School

Joel,

I don't disagree with your observation. However, the old California
standards made it very easy for a student to avoid the basic sciences
altogether.

There is a lot of room for debate on this, witness the letters in Physics
Today regarding the advisability or inadvisability of putting the high
school physics course in the 9th grade. Prompting several letter writers to
brave crossing swords with Leon Lederman in print.

I'm not so sure that it is inappropriate for 5th graders or (maybe) even 9th
graders to do a little "stamp collecting" in earth and space science.
Learning facts is something a child's mind does quite well.
