Agree completely; MANY students want to label a force
on a force diagram as "centripetal force". MANY have a
very tough time accepting that cent force is just a
special name given to a net inward force which may be

Yes, of course I should have stated that
"centrifugal" force arises i=
n a
non-inertial reference frame!
Still I would claim that there is no centripetal
force as such; it is=
just a
nickname for a sum of real forces acting in the
normal direction.

about centripetal force as an extra real force in
addition to tension=

weight?
