Re: North

The polynesians used the stars on the horizon (I don't remember exactly
how, but it work(s)ed well, as they were near the equator.). A feature
article in the old Sci. Am. That's how they populated all those little
(and not so little) isles.

When did celestial navigation begin?

How did the desert nomads navigate years ago?

And ocean mariners?

How was it done in the 1000BC--1000AD time period?

When was a "North Star" considered to exist and begin to be helpful?

NB Polaris has a declination of <89deg currently but at that time its
declination varied from ~75deg in 600BC to 81deg in 400AD.

The previous North Star was Thuban >>2000BC.

Is my data correct?

Comments???
