connect help

Hi all-
I'm having trouble with my windows connection to my server (I've
got a dual boot pc -this is coming from the Linux side).
I've recently installed Windows 98. Everything worked fine. Then
I installed and uninstalled software for my new Kodak DX3600 digital
camera, and all of a sudden I could no longer connect to my server.
Investigation, and perusal of the ppplog, shows that connection
and authentication proceeds OK and the ppp protocol is established OK.
Then the connection is immediately broken. I can't tell whether the
server (which handles lots of clients) or my computer is breaking the
connection.
I've searched the net; the only suggestion I've found was to
disable any time-out on my modem - which I've done.
The local folks who administer the computers are baffled. Anybody
got any insights?
The upgrade was from Windows 95 to Windows 98 SE. I can't go
back to 95, the system tells me.
Regards,
Jack
