There is a species of elevator sometimes used in colleges for student
transport which does not stop, and does not necessarily
ascend vertically
but may traverse, and contains a chain of walk on capsules on
an endless belt
onto which one hops.


A rather fun example appears in the opening credits of the movie "Maenner".
