Which just goes to show that, when the public is involved, risk
assessment has a lot more to do with psychology than it does with
mathematics. The public will accept considerable risk in situations
where they at least *seem* to be in control (driving a car), but
their tolerance for risks goes way down when the source of that risk
seems to be something over which they have little or no control
(having a nuclear power plant move in next door).
