PER conference and proceedings

Please excuse the cross-posting.

Below lies the call for contributed posters to this summer's PER
conference. As an added bonus, we have decided to publish conference
proceedings. Read on for more details.

I hope to see you there!
Jeff

===============================================================

In what we hope will become standard practice, this year's Physics
Education Research Conference will publish proceedings that include
contributed, peer-reviewed papers on Physics Education Research. The plan
for publication has evolved through discussions between Karen Cummings,
Scott Franklin, Jeff Marx (co-chairs of the PER Conference) and Joe Redish
(Editor of the Physics Education Research Supplement to the American
Journal of Physics). Nevertheless, please remember this is the first time
that this has occurred, so please bear with us.

PEER-REVIEW PROCESS: The publication of the conference proceedings is the
result of a strong belief on the part of the conference co-chairs that a
written record of the scholarly work undertaken by physics education
researchers will be a valuable resource in the future work of the
community. As such, we welcome not just the submission of significant or
final results, but also preliminary research results and discussions of
works in progress. In order to reconcile this goal with a desire to
provide a peer-reviewed avenue for publication, the proceedings will have
two sections. One section will contain only publications that successfully
navigate the peer-review process. The second section will contain
manuscripts that did not. If you would like to submit a manuscript and do
not want to attempt to have it peer-reviewed, you may request that at the
time of submission. Manuscripts that do not succeed in the peer-review
process will automatically be published in the nonpeer-reviewed section of
the proceedings unless the author request otherwise.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTED POSTER PRESENTATIONS AND PAPERS: ELIGABILITY Anyone
who registers for and attends the summer of 2001 Physics Education Research
Conference (PERC) to be held in conjunction with the American Association
of Physics Teachers (AAPT) meeting in Rochester, NY will be eligible to
contribute one paper to the proceedings. In addition, in order for a paper
to be accepted for publication, it must be presented at the PERC as either
an invited oral presentation or a contributed poster presentation. You do
NOT have to submit a paper in order to do a contributed poster
presentation. All first authors on contributions to the proceedings must
meet the requirements discussed above. Work presented at the main AAPT
meeting is eligible for submission to the PERC. Presentation of the work
at the main AAPT meeting is not required for submission to the PERC. The
only way to contribute more than one paper is as a co-author with someone
else. Everyone submitting a paper for publication in the proceedings will
be required to help with the peer-review of other people's contributions.

ABSTACT SUBMISSION: Please contact Jeff Marx by e-mail
at jmarx@wmdc.edu before June30, 2001 if you plan to contribute a
manuscript for publication in the conference proceedings and/or do a
contributed poster presentation. Please state whether you plan to do only
a poster presentation or a poster presentation with a manuscript
submission. (As you may know, there is currently no opportunity for us to
allow contributed oral presentations at the PERC, so this is your only
chance for contributed presentations.) We do not need an abstract or title
for the presentation. We simply need your name so that we can get a count
on the number of presentations and manuscripts. If you decide at some
later time that you would like to withdraw your intention to submit, please
notify Jeff Marx.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: If you are submitting a paper for publication in the
conference proceedings, you must mail 4 copies of the manuscript to:
Scott Franklin
Rochester Institute of Technology
Department of Physics
85 Lomb Memorial Dr.
Rochester, New York
14623-5603
Manuscript submissions must be postmarked on or before July 15, 2001. No
late submissions will be accepted. (Sorry for the late notice).

FORMAT OF PAPERS: Papers must be ready for publication when submitted. In
order for this to occur, the following guidelines must be followed: Papers
must be written in English with 11 point, New Times Roman font. The title
of the paper should be 14 point font. Single line spacing must be used
with left and right margins of 1.5 inch. Top and bottom margins must be
1.25 inch. The text is to be formatted in two columns of 2.75 inches each
with a center spacing of 0.50 inch. The text alignment must be
"justified". The maximum length of a paper, including figures, is 4 pages
formatted as discussed above. The page limit includes figures, figure
captions and references. All labels on figures must be legible. (We
realize that this means papers must be brief.)

FEE FOR PUBLICATION: Beyond the conference registration fee, there will be
no additional fee required to contribute a paper for publication in the
proceedings. Once published, the proceedings will be available for
purchase. The purchase price of the proceedings is not included in the
registration fee for the meeting. We estimate the cost of the proceedings
to be $25, but the exact cost will depend on the number of papers submitted
for publication. Orders for the proceedings will be taken at the conference.
