Big Bang Theory

At 05:39 15 02 2001 , someone wrote the following in the midst of a much
longer discussion:

I found the scientific papers on the Big Bang theory. Well actually it
is a book written by the scientist who made the discovery. The journals
that his papers were published in, are referenced in the book.
The book is "Wrinkles in Time" written by George Smoot and Keay
Davidson. It is a bit heavy on the science data. It is not a book that
you can read in just an evening.

The above is from another (non-science) list: (Well on Touched By An Angel
no less -- I hope for no extraneous commentary here) Can someone please
illuminate what has been said?
I have never heard of the book or of the authors -- And "discovery"??? Am
I demonstrating gross ignorance here?
